Creative Writing Prompt #159

Kay, prompt #159 said this: Write a mini-story using the following words in order; shell, comic book, discarded soapbox, rubber soles, post card.

Tyler was stretched out on his bed, the rubber soles of his Converse tapping quietly on his foot-board, thinking about going to buy a Pepsi at the Shell gas station down the street. His lack of money quickly quashed that idea, and instead he picked up one of his comic books off the floor next to his bed and started reading. In the story he was reading, the super hero vigilante had just discovered an abandoned child in an discarded wooden soapbox. Tyler quickly dozed off while reading.
His dreams were filled with a masked version of himself rescuing children from evil  step-mothers and young women from jealous ex-boyfriends. It was exhilarating; being a hero with a secret identity.
"Tyler!!! Dinner's ready!!!"
The call from him mother woke him from the glory of his daring rescues.
"And you got a postcard from your father!"
This really woke him up. He ran out his room and down the stairs. His dad was serving for the US Military in Iraq. Tyler hadn't seen him for almost 6 months, when he had last come home for only two weeks. Every postcard was a treat.
Reading the card, he realized that the heroes in his comic books were just glorified fiction. He realized that service men like his dad were the true heroes.

He still loved reading his comic books, but he never again wished that he could be like them. He loved his dad, and if he wanted to be a hero, he would be something like him.
